Need something for a bit of backlighting.

Either light the background, or light the back of your head to separate you (the subject) from the background.

Self-portraits are something I'm really weak at. One thing I recently tried (with results I won't share) is holding my camera by the tripod at about hip level, so that I can basically hold the camera body 4-6ft away from me and up fairly high for a neat angle/composition.

Gets heavy though, and hitting focus points is tough.
